From Guido Guinizzelli to Dante Alighieri. A philosophical perspective on chapter XX from Vita nova or the origins of “Amor, ch’a nullo amato amar perdona”

Abstract

Our intention here is to analyse chapter XX from Vita nova and draw how it leads into Canto V of the Commedia. Nevertheless, as in this chapter, and in general the Dolce stil novo, has a crucial precedent in Guido Guinizzelli’s canzone, “Al cor gentil rempaira sempre amore” [To the noble heart always returns love]. It will be our first task to analyse this canzone, its load of “philosophical” arguments and its doctrinal content (the doctrine of love). Consequently, evidence of a clear line that goes from Guinizzelli to Dante will be shown, as well as the evolution in the quality of the arguments and how this doctrine converges to Paolo and Francesca, in Canto V from Inferno.

Author Biography

Víctor García-Salas, Instituto Científico Técnico y Educativo (ICTE) / Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. Facultad de Estudios Superiores Acatlán

Professor of philosophy and literary translator. He holds a Bachelor in Modern Language and Literature (Italian Literature). Bachelor’s and Master’s in Philosophy from UNAM. In 2013 he was resident of the International Center for Literary Translation in Banff, Canada. In 2015 he won the Italian Government Translation Award, for the translation of the novel Dies irae, by Antonio De Petro (Garabatos publishing house). In 2016, he completed a research stay, at Università degli Studi di Udine, with Dr. Silvia Contarini, on Pietro Verri and the Italian Enlightenment. In 2019 he received the Alfonso Caso Medal for University Merit. His translations also include El embrollo, also by Antonio De Petro (Garabatos publishing house), El diablo llora, by Paola Puzzo Sagrado (I lumi), la Pequeña antropología (Garabatos publishing house); Para conocer a Jesús (Ediciones de las Sibilas) and Poesías (Ediciones del Lirio), the latter, all by Giovanni Riva.

He is currently a teaches philosophy at the Instituto Científico Técnico y Educativo (ICTE) and at Facultad de Estudios Superiores Acatlán (UNAM). He is pursuing a PhD in Philosophy (ethics) at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México.
