Abstract

The city transforms its image in the name of progress. This struggle between past and present is particularly evident in historic areas, where integrating elements of modern life is no easy task. The city not only holds a material dimension, its architecture, but also an emotional dimension that the photographer uses to challenge the viewer through a series of authorial resources. Here, the use of the strong sense of aesthetics stands out as a way of reflecting on the transformations of the image (and the imaginary) of the contemporary city. Consequently, the project presented consists of the creation of a photographic work that problematizes the relationship between tradition and modernity in the built environment, as well as the aesthetic (and ethical) issues that this raises. Within this framework, visual ethnography, as a methodological approach, facilitates an approach to the architectural phenomenon from a critical and situated perspective.

Author Biography

Pedro Palleiro-Sánchez, Complutense University of Madrid

PHD in Education (2020), Master’s Degree in Art and Creation (2018) by the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM). Master’s Degree in Teacher formation for Secondary Education (2015) and a degree in Social Work (2014) by Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED). Degree in Graphic Design (1999) by Escola Superior de Arte e Deseño Pablo Picasso de A Coruña.

Nowadays, he combines his teaching works with the university and no university fields with and artistic and researched production. His main research areas focus on the critical study of image and the confluence between art, technology and pedagogy. In the artistic field notable photographic exhibitions about relationships between the urban space, local memory and identity stand out, such as the most recent “Arquitectura Forense” (April-May 2025), presented in Sala Auditorio del Ayuntamiento de Las Rozas in Madrid, España.
