An approach to Mesoamerican cosmotechnics based on Alfredo López Austin: Is the tlacuache the pre-Hispanic Prometheus?

Abstract

This text explores the possibility of a Mesoamerican cosmotechnics based on Alfredo López Austin's mythological analysis of the region. Drawing on Yuk Hui's proposal in “The Question of Technology in China” and his concept of cosmotechnics, this study seeks to initiate a discussion on technological diversity in Mesoamerica and offer an alternative framework for understanding technology in non-Western contexts. To this end, the methodological approach to the study of Mesoamerica is first problematized. Then, the origin of technology is explored in the myth of the possum and the theft of fire. Subsequently, Bernard Stiegler's ideas are revisited to understand the importance of the Mesoamerican calendar and temporality in technology. Finally, three cosmotechnic characteristics are proposed: the calendarization of technical activities, techniques as a respectful dialogue, and the disposition towards work.
