Abstract

This essay is an analysis of Book of visions and showings of the English anchoress Julian of Norwich (14thcentury), based on the research made by German philosopher Rudolf Otto (1869-1937) and Mexican philosopher Isabel Cabrera (1958-). The purpose of this analysis is to emphasize the sapiential value of the anchoress’ thought. On one hand, it presents a description of mystical thinking according to Otto’s and Cabrera’s phenomenology theory. Through the concept of mysterium tremendum et fascinans, the epistemic and the aesthetic character of the mystical process are highlighted. On the other hand, the essay studies some passages of the Book by Lady Julian, showing the relation between mysticism and the numinous vision as a mode of “union with the sacred.”
