This essay examines the body as an analytical category in the feminine mystical thought between the 8th and 13th centuries. A historiographic discussion is presented: how the medieval body has been approached to understand gender roles, and how mysticism appears as a school of thought were women have found a place to reflect on their faith.
The analysis focuses on two referents of feminine mysticism: Rabi’a of Basra, a freed slave who became a Sufi figure in 8th-century Irak; and Catalina of Siena, an italian Christian mystic from the 14th century. Both emerged in urban contexts of economic prosperity and social tension and developed a relationship with the divine mediated through the body. A selection of texts by these philosophers is analyzed through the contextual framework to understand their conception of the body and its relationship with the spirit.
