Abstract

Based on the text “A Letter to an Architecture Professor”, published in Bitácora 37, this essay reconsiders the notion of mistake within the architecture community, particularly into the academic scope, in order to transform it and prove it right as an important and necessary event. It opposes some professor’s views (considering unnecessary minutiae), that result in obliviousness to the critical conditions that the architect and the student actually face. “A letter to an Architecture student” is a reformulation of the precepts of the former text; it invites readers to reflect on the mutable nature of architecture, while at the same time it promotes the search of viability beyond method.

Author Biography

Gabriela Carrillo, Taller Reconstruir MX

She graduated from the School of Architecture of UNAM. In 2011, she partnered with Mauricio Rocha and formed |Rocha + Carrillo|. In 2017, she formed her own architectural firm Reconstruir MX and Estudio RX (along with Loreta Castro) located at the School of Architecture of UNAM. In 2016, she mounted the exhibition “The Great Animal Orchestra” at the Fondation Cartier and the Hermès Pavilion in Milan.

She has been academician at the School of Architecture of UNAM since 2003, Marjorie Mead Hooker Visiting Professor at the University of New Mexico (2007) and at the W. A. Ve. 2019 for the University of Venice.

She has received national and international awards, such as the Gold and Silver medals in the Mexican, Ibero-American and Pan-American Biennale, the Gold Medal by the Academy of Architecture of France (2019), among others.
