The article “Poetry as a motivational instrument” aims to motivate students in learning German, due to a drastic drop out of students in intermediate and higher level classes (A1.2, A2.2) of the Global Plan at the Language Teaching Center of the Facultad de Estudios Superiores Acatlán de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México.
For this reason, a deep analysis of the different aspects of motivation and its application in the German class is required. In this context, poetry plays an important role, bringing students closer to the target culture in order to strengthening their personality, promoting their social awareness, increasing their cultural horizon, and achieving success in learning German. Expressionist poems by Georg Trakl and poems by Bertolt Brecht with a critical position towards society have been chosen. These poems help students mature in their personality and become interested in the target culture and language. To support this goal, a section of didactic recommendations is included, reflecting the theory and its application in literary workshops. Consequently, the article is presented in three sections: “Theoretical reflection on motivation”, “Motivation through poetry” and Recommendation for didactics”.
