Abstract

This essay examines the perspectives for the transformation of the economical growth model in Latin America (LA) in the context of geopolitical tensions between the United States (US) and China. The analysis of the economical results derived from the strategies implemented in the region suggests that, if international competition tilts in favor of China, LA would have the opportunity to rethink the growth model historically associated with US influence. Otherwise, the possibilities of a substantial change in strategy would be limited. Evidence indicates that, over the last 25 years, Latin American economies have been strongly influenced by external factors. In this scenario, the region has been divided into two distinct blocs: one with a growing Chinese presence and the other under the dominance of the US.
