El violentómetro. Un instrumento de evaluación de la violencia obstétrica

Abstract

This paper presents graphic and educational materials designed as rulers denominated “violence meters” that are useful for the visibilization, identification, evaluation and prevention of obstetric violence (VO) in different levels within the mexican healthcare system (SSM).The main objective is to promote maternal and perinatal mental health (SMMP). A violence meter is proposed for each stage of the perinatal period (PP): pregnancy, birth, postpartum and lactation. For their design, a descriptive and direct observation study was conducted based on the current mexican legislation with regard to maternal and child health (LMVS), emphasizing on obstetric violence. An instrument was applied to three different groups of women who went through the perinatal period in the mexican heatlhcare system. Results showed proof of obstetric violence, as well as the physical, psyquiatric and emotional sequelae of it that persist with time. There was also evidence that healthcare workers do not follow protocols stablished by the Official Mexican Standard NOM-007-SSA2-2016 (Secretaría de Salud 2016).

Yazmín Victoria Rocha-Román, Salud Mental Integral para la Maternidad. A.C.

Master’s degree holder in Administración de Instituciones de Salud. Bachelor’s degree holder in Psicología. Professor of Psicoprofilaxis Perinatal. Education in Salud Mental Materna y Perinatal. Education in Psicoterapia Junguiana. Pioneer in the promotion and care of maternal and perinatal mental health in Mexico through teaching, investigating, legislating and therapeutics, by implementing a maternal and perinatal mental health approach. Founder and director of the projects Salud Mental Perinatal México and de Salud Mental Integral para la Maternidad A.C. Co-founder of the Red Mexicana de Salud Mental Perinatal.

Professor, researcher, workshop leader, panelist, speaker, legislator, of topics related to maternal and perinatal mental health with 33 years of teaching experience and administration of educational institutions. 18 years of experience working with topics related to research, teaching and dissemination of maternal and perinatal mental health in Mexico and Latin America, including obstetric violence with an approach on promotion and care of perinatal and maternal mental health. Counselor in psychological consulting with a maternal and perinatal approach of 10 years.

Engineer in Electrónica by the Instituto Tecnológico de Puebla. She holds a Master’s degree and PhD in Ciencias en Ingeniería Eléctrica specializing in Bioelectrónica from the Centro de Investigación y Estudios Avanzados del IPN (CINVESTAV campus Zacatenco). She completed three diploma courses at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México of Divulgación de la Ciencia, Docencia de la Ingeniería, and Educación Superior Contemporánea. She is an academic technician at the Departamento de Ingeniería de Sistemas Computacionales y Automatización (DISCA) of the Instituto de Investigaciones en Matemáticas Aplicadas and in Sistemas (IIMAS) of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México since 2008. She was coordinator of the Comisión para la Igualdad de Género of said institute from 2014 to December 2024. She was a member of the Comisión de ética para la investigación from 2022 to 2025, and she is a member of the institute responsible of student services.

Among the topics that have been addressed for research and outreach: maternity in the academy, obstetric violence and women in STEM. She has supervised several bachelor’s degree theses of students and has given several public lectures. She has received training in gender studies from an intersectional approach. She has a special interest in the interaction between gender, maternity and the academy. She worked as a professor in the Ingeniería en electrónica and Ingeniería en Telecomunicaciones courses at Facultad de Ingeniería UNAM, and in the Ingeniería en Sistemas Computacionales y Telecomunicaciones Bachelor’s degree at the Universidad del Pedregal in the Master’s degree Sistemas Embebidos at INFOTEC Aguascalientes. She is currently teaching the Género para los estudiantes course of the Bachelor’s degree Ciencia de Datos. She has volunteered at the ONGs Technovation Challenge Ciudad de México (2016-2017) and Epic Queen Ciudad de México (2016-2017), in which their main objective is to narrow the gender gap in STEM majors. She was a mentor in the program PAUTA in 2018, this program encourages scientific vocation in children and teenagers. She was part of the organizing committee of the Feria de talleres y charlas de Divulgación Mexicanas del Futuro that encourages female talent to pursue STEM majors in 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2025. She worked as a volunteer in the group Violencia de Género de Científicas Mexicanas from February to December 2020.
