Bellow, a critical review of the PAPIME PE 3047171 project is presented, carried out from 2017 to 2019 by a group of teachers and students from UNAM, the Fidel Velázquez Technological University and the University of Oviedo, Spain. The project’s topic is the intellectual independence of the university community, as a strategic factor of the 21st century. Intellectual independence refers to people who possesses the attitudes, aptitudes and context conditions to develop critical thinking and build knowledge. This attribute has allowed humanity to move towards the generation of valid knowledge. Intellectual independence permits people to become agents of their own personal, cultural and socio-economic transformation, through detecting, posing and solving problems. Nowadays, that humanity is experiencing unprecedented health and economical crisis, intellectual independence is what will shore it up, making the value of its development more evident in people. For this reason, this project sought to make an inventory of the attributes of intellectual independence and diagnose the extent to which teachers and students count on it, and on this basis, propose digital teaching materials that promote their development. Thus, the project and its main products are described, as well as its impact at the academic level.
